SOTM: THE LAST HIGH – THE DANDY WARHOLS

This month’s featured song is one that boasts an intriguing backstory that began in March with a viewing of the timeless comedic masterpiece, Forgetting Sarah Marshall, which stars the beloved Kristen Bell, known for her iconic portrayal of Veronica Mars. A wave of nostalgia swept over me as I recalled the incredible theme song for the show, We Used to be Friends by The Dandy Warhols. I was struck by its undeniable catchiness and musical prowess. My curiosity piqued and I delved deep into The Dandy Warhols’ discography and have since been engrossed in their vast array of hits, including the ever-popular Bohemian Like You, as well as I Love You, Highlife, and many more. Suffice it to say that April has been a month of pure, unadulterated The Dandy Warhols appreciation for me.

The Dandy Warhols are an alternative rock band from Portland, Oregon, formed in 1994. They’ve released numerous albums and gained a dedicated fan-base. The Last High, a track from their 2003 album, Welcome to the Monkey House, features a captivating melody that effortlessly blends a rich array of synthesizer sounds. The track’s poignant lyrics aptly capture the tumultuous aftermath of a romantic relationship’s demise, blending both a sense of unwavering bravado and a deep undercurrent of melancholy. It was highly-received and is one of the band’s most iconic tracks, emblematic of their unique blend of genres and ability to create catchy, anthemic music.

To be candid, selecting the Song Of The Month feature track was a challenge, as the band in question possesses a plethora of notable songs. Nonetheless, after careful consideration, The Last High emerged as the clear standout and ultimate choice for the coveted title. After multiple listens, this decade-old track has remained persistently lodged in my mind throughout the month of April.
