SOTM: FLOWERS – MILEY CYRUS

If anyone knows how to slay, it’s Miley Cyrus and her latest single Flowers proves just that. Since leaving Disney in 2011, Cyrus has succeeded epicly in catching our attention; from Nobody’s Perfect, Party In The USA, Wrecking Ball and now Flowers, Cyrus continues to make headlines and we love it!

After a three year hiatus of original music from the artist, Flowers was already a single with much excitement and high expectations surrounding it, a much awaited comeback for Cyrus if you will and boy does she know how to expertly show up; in high heels, red lipstick and a gold dress ready to get fan’s in a frenzy.

From first listen, it’s clear to recognise the track as a catchy pop break-up song, made particularly clear to us within the chorus lyrics of – “I can buy myself flowers. Write my name in the sand. Talk to myself for hours. Say things you don’t understand. I can take myself dancing and I can hold my own hand. Yeah, I can love me better than you can.”

However, it wasn’t until further research, brought apparent by the dedication and enthusiasm from Cyrus’ fans, that I realised just how significant of a break-up number Flowers actually is.

First off, Cyrus released the statement song on her ex-husband Liam Hemsworth’s Birthday, January 13.

Gasps

If that’s not a subtle hint, I don’t know what is. Alongside this, Cyrus’ Flowers is an interpolation of Bruno Mars’ 2012 hit When I Was Your Man. A song Hemsworth reportedly dedicated to Cyrus on their wedding day. She added a deeper base and more of an upbeat flair but shared strong parallels between lyrics. Where Mars would harmoniously sing “I should’ve bought you flowers.” Cyrus replaces it with “I can buy myself flowers.” belted with an appealing edge behind her voice.

Cyrus’ upcoming eighth studio album  – ‘Endless Summer Vacation’ is set to be released into the world on March 10th. I, like many other Cyrus fans, were hoping for her next album to show more of the ‘Rock ‘N’ Roll’ side of Smiley Miley, made particularly apparent to us when she released a revamped version of Blondie’s – Heart Of Glass which shows Cyrus’ seductive grunge-esque vocals off to perfection. That being said, we can’t complain that her comeback single is an instantly iconic pop banger and with a record being set of over 100 million streams (the highest ever number of Spotify listens) within the first week of release, she obviously knows how to own what works for her.

Not only does Flowers see Cyrus hit fresh peaks, but it also allows her fans to witness a post divorce self love journey of growth within her. We could not be more thrilled over her success from the smash hit and the excitement for Endless Summer Vacation to drop is very much real.
